Generating and updating cross-references
After you have marked targets and references, you can generate the cross-references. For the information in a cross-reference to update whenever you make a change, you must regenerate the cross-references.
On occasion, when you update a document, the links between a reference and a target are broken, creating a broken cross-reference. When you update the cross-references, any cross-references that are broken are represented by question marks. After you have regenerated the cross-references, you should search for broken cross-references. To fix broken cross references, mark the reference and target again, then regenerate the cross references. For information about marking for cross-references, see “Marking targets and references for cross-references.”
